The morning after
It was a calm night in Hong Kong after the policy address was giving. We were pleasantly surprised by that. But that does not mean that the protests are over or anyone agreed with what was said.
Media reports suggest the protesters didn’t think the speech was important so they showed their reaction by not showing up. The protesters are planning another march (with or without police approval) this coming Sunday. They must be resting up for that or any other protests that will come up over the next few days.
Just because the protesters didn’t show up doesn’t mean that Carrie Lam had no problems. She did and plenty of them. She arrived at the Legislative Council chambers and started her speech. Those who oppose her started to shout and do whatever the could to stop her from making her speech. They did and she left.
It wasn’t until later a pre-recorded video was shown in the chambers with her giving her speech. At least there were no reports of people yelling at the video screen.
It is one thing to not like a person or position. It is something else for when you do what you can to destroy that person or position. If the members of the Legislative Council didn’t like the position of Carrie Lam they could have either not shown up or maintain a silence and doing something else.
Respect, in the political field, seems to be a thing of the past no matter what country you are in.
