First Church

This is the intersection of Wellington and Pottinger Streets in Hong Kong. Besides some businesses, there isn’t much to see especially if you’re looking for history. The only thing of historical value here are some stone steps of a bygone era.

However, in 1841 this was the most holiest place in all of Hong Kong. For it was on this site that Mgr. Theodore Joset, came over from Macao and established the first Catholic church in Hong Kong. Mgr. Joset died in Hong Kong in 1842 and is buried here.

Since that time Hong Kong has often tried to overcome Macau’s lead. Even today Hong Kong comes in second best with Macau. Hong Kong has come full circle.

Our Lady of China, pray for us.
